Faith-Based Conversational English Curriculum

Refugees, immigrants, international students, and foreign workers have come to your neighborhood. They may be struggling in a new land, far from family, lacking confidence because they don’t speak English well… Are you willing to share Christ’s love with them in both practical and meaningful ways? Here’s a tool that can help you begin conversations about Jesus with English Language Learners.

The Eyes to See, Ears to Hear Conversational English Curriculum

is a faith-based program which can be used to begin spiritual conversations with English Language Learners. Targeted for multilevel classes of Advanced Beginners and higher levels, each unit revolves around a 5-minute segment of The Story of Jesus through the Eyes of Children®, a film based on the Gospel of Luke. The teacher’s guide was written for those new to teaching English, and is also a helpful tool for more experienced instructors.

“The 'Eyes to See, Ears to Hear' curriculum is a beautiful blend of practical ESL exercises and biblically sound teaching. The opening activities allow students to interact with each other and expand the vocabulary and grammar skills necessary for daily living. While the activities based on the film give students a better understanding of the life and ministry of Jesus, they also provide a safe environment for students and teachers to have honest dialogues about their faith. The Eyes to See, Ears to Hear curriculum is a must-have for those teaching English on the mission field near or far!”

“This informal course in English conversation skills is the most effective I’ve seen in incorporating biblical material into conversational English lesson plans. It is structured in such a way that it touches on all areas of English language learning, yet concludes, after twelve weeks, with a low key opportunity for those students who wish to invite Jesus Christ into their lives.”

— Jerri Younkman, Member of the Arkansas State Literacy Team, Arkansas Baptist State Convention

“Eyes to see, Ears to Hear' Conversational English Curriculum is a professionally well-done curriculum. Heidi Jensen has put her brain, heart and a lot of time into developing this course. As a professional ESL teacher, when I saw what she had done, I knew it was good. I had to fight some resistance from my volunteers to use these materials. Our ESL classes use secular

materials. Our ESL Bible classes center on Bible content. Eyes to see, Ears to Hear centered on ESL but is based on the Jesus film. It covers a variety of learning styles so all students feel welcome and engage with the material. To the surprise of my volunteers, the multi-leveled students enjoyed the material and being able to share the Jesus story they had learned in an improved English. They all went home with pride because they had learned and were also able to tell a story about Jesus that they did not know before... Congratulations, Heidi!”
